What Is an AI Agent? A Plain-English Explainer

An AI agent is more than a chatbot. It can plan, take actions, use tools, and complete multi-step tasks on its own. Here’s what that actually means — and what to do with it.


You’ve probably heard “AI agent” thrown around constantly. But the term gets used for everything from a simple chatbot to a fully autonomous software system — which makes it confusing. Let’s clear it up.


The Short Answer

An AI agent is a program that uses a large language model (LLM) as its brain to perceive its environment, make decisions, and take actions — often without a human in the loop for each step.

A regular chatbot responds to a single message. An agent can execute a plan across many steps, call tools (search the web, run code, send an email), and keep going until a goal is complete.


Chatbot vs. Agent: What’s the Difference?

The easiest way to understand the difference is with an example.

Chatbot: You ask “What are the top AI tools for small businesses?” It responds with a list.

Agent: You say “Research the top AI tools for small businesses, write a 1,000-word blog post comparing them, save it as a draft, and notify me when it’s ready.” The agent searches the web, reads multiple pages, drafts and edits the post, saves the file, and sends you a message — all autonomously.

How an AI Agent Works

At its core, every AI agent follows a loop:

  1. Observe — Take in the current state (the goal, the context, tool results so far)
  2. Think — The LLM decides what to do next
  3. Act — Call a tool, write output, or take an action
  4. Repeat — Feed the result back in and continue until the goal is met

This loop is sometimes called ReAct (Reason + Act) — the agent reasons about what to do, does it, sees the result, and reasons again.

What makes it powerful: the LLM isn’t just generating text. It’s making decisions about what tools to use and when to stop.


The Anatomy of an Agent

Every agent has roughly the same components:

The Model

The LLM doing the reasoning. Claude, GPT-4, Gemini, Llama — the model is the intelligence. A better model generally means a more capable agent, though it’s not the only factor.

The System Prompt

The instructions that define what the agent is, what it should do, and how it should behave. This is the single most important lever you have over an agent’s behavior. A bad system prompt produces a bad agent, regardless of the model.

Tools

Functions the agent can call — web search, code execution, file read/write, API calls, database queries. Tools are what let an agent do things rather than just say things.

Memory

How the agent remembers things. This can be in-context (within the current conversation), stored in files, or retrieved from a database. Memory is what allows an agent to function across sessions and learn over time.

The Loop

The orchestration layer that runs the observe-think-act cycle. This might be a framework like LangChain, a custom harness, or a product like OpenClaw.


Types of AI Agents

Single Agent

One LLM, one system prompt, a set of tools. The simplest form. Works well for most use cases — research assistants, writing helpers, personal automation.

Multi-Agent

Multiple specialized agents working together. An orchestrator agent breaks down a big task and delegates to sub-agents (a researcher, a writer, a reviewer). More powerful for complex workflows, but harder to debug.

Autonomous Agents

Agents that run continuously on a schedule, monitor inputs, and act without being explicitly triggered. Think of a business agent that checks your inbox every morning, drafts replies to routine emails, and flags anything unusual.

The best use of agents: tasks that are repetitive, well-defined, and tolerate occasional errors — or where you can review the output before it matters.


A Practical Example: A Morning Briefing Agent

Here’s what a simple daily briefing agent looks like in practice:

  1. Runs every morning at 7am
  2. Reads your calendar for the day’s events
  3. Checks your email for anything urgent
  4. Searches for news on topics you care about
  5. Writes a 200-word summary
  6. Sends it to you via Slack or email

No human steps involved after setup. The agent observes (calendar, email, news), thinks (what’s important?), and acts (write summary, send message).

That’s an agent. Simple, useful, and genuinely time-saving.
